  Motorcycle Transport.

Motorcycles can be transported any number of ways. The conventional method for motorcycle transport is in the back of a truck or van. Motorcycle trailers are popular for motorcycle trackdays or motorcycle racing. Even a hitch mounted motorcycle carrier works well for transporting motorcycles. Regardless of how you transport your motorcycle, the techniques and tips for loading a motorcycle and securing a motorcycle remain the same.

The proper motorcycle ramp is critical for safely loading a motorcycle.  A scrap piece of wood and some bricks is asking for trouble. There are many types of motorcycle ramps available. Consider where and what you will be loading most when shopping for a motorcycle ramp.

Motorcycles loaded in a truck, van, trailer or hitch motorcycle carrier, all need the front wheel secured. A motorcycle wheel chock is ideal. The motorcycle wheel chock prevents the front wheel from slipping to one side while allowing the motorcycle to be strapped down tightly.

When securing a motorcycle for transport it is necessary to compress the front forks. The Canyon Dancer Bar Harness works best for most motorcycles. Soft straps over the lower fork brace work well for all others.  The bar harness and the soft straps both work by attaching to a fixed point on the vehicle or platform with motorcycle tie downs.  Motorcycle tie-downs come in ratcheting and cam-lock.

Gradually tighten the tie-downs, alternating sides until the motorcycle forks compress. The motorcycle should be situated vertically and secure on its own. Be careful not to over compress the front forks and damage the fork seals.

Using two more motorcycle straps will keep the rear of the motorcycle from hopping around. If you aren't using a wheel chock, tying the front wheel to prevent side to side movement is a good idea as well.

If you have to leave the tailgate or van doors open, check for and secure anything that might fly out.

Loading a motorcycle can be tricky and dangerous for one person. Always try to have help when loading your motorcycle for transport.
