Motorcycle Storage.

The majority of motorcycle owners will at some point store their motorcycle for some reason or another.  At the same time many of us already make a habit of putting our motorcycles in storage every winter.

If anyone has ever stored a motorcycle for the winter, then they have most likely encountered at least one of the common problems associated with motorcycle storage.  Fortunately, most of these problems are preventable with just a few simple steps. Take care of your motorcycle battery.  Consider the fuel in the motorcycle.  Be aware of how time and the elements will affect your motorcycle in storage.

Take care of your motorcycle battery.  Batteries discharge over time when not in use.  If you plan on storing your motorcycle, battery charging is a must.

Today, keeping your motorcycle battery maintained and ready for Spring is easier than ever with a new style of motorcycle battery charger or battery tender.  These motorcycle battery chargers monitor the state of your battery and will adjust their charge rate accordingly.  When your motorcycle battery is fully charged,  the charger will shut off until more current is required.  As opposed to straight rate chargers, the 'battery tender' will not overcharge or cook the electrolyte out of your battery

Consider the fuel in the tank.  Gasoline will go 'stale' over time and make it impossible to start your motorcycle or if you do get it started, it could run poorly until all of the stale gas is circulated through the fuel system.

Again the best remedy is to avoid this situation altogether.

The old method was to completely drain the fuel system, yes this includes the carburetor float bowls.  Fortunately, today there are fuel stabilizers available, designed specifically to insure that fuel in stored vehicles is kept fresh for easy starting when desired.

This additive is safe to run though the fuel system and should be cycled through before storage to treat every component in the fuel system.

Be aware of how time and the elements will affect your motorcycle in storage.

If you have to store your motorcycle outside, using a motorcycle cover to protect it from the sun and rain is a must.

Rubber components can easily dry out and crack in the sun and moisture has a way of wreaking havoc on electrical items as well as getting into the fuel system.

Try to keep your motorcycle tires out of the dirt. If you have to park in the dirt, watch out for the sinking sidestand!

Storing your motorcycle in a garage obviously has its benefits. A full safety check before riding again should always be performed.

No matter where your motorcycle is stored, the most commonly overlooked detail is a drop in tire pressures!
